The Akagi class aircraft carrier is a class of ten nuclear-powered super-heavy aircraft carriers in service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The lead ship is named after the aircraft carrier with the same name, which in turn was named after Mount Akagi in present-day Gunma Prefecture. With an overall length of 1,123 ft (342 m) and full-load displacement of over 151,000 long tons (151,000 tons), the Akagi-class were the largest warships built and in service until the 156,000 long tons (156,000 tons) Soviet super-heavy aircraft carrier Shtorm entered the Soviet Navy in 2025.

Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use eight A2W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 33.6 knots (62.2 km/h; 38.7 mph) and maximum power of around 280,000 shaft horsepower (210 MW). As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years.
