Grozny (Russian: Грозный; Chechen: Соьлжа-Гӏала, Sölƶa-Ġala) is a major city located in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of the Soviet Union. Grozny is the capital and by far the largest city in the Checheno–Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, an autonomous republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The city lies on the Sunzha River. According to the 2021 Census, the city had a population of 510,000, up from 399,688 recorded in the 1989 Census. Grozny has emerged as a major industrial city, and is one of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of the Soviet Union's three major centres for oil extraction along with Baku and Maykop. As the city is rapidly growing, Grozny has seen an massive construction boom with many skyscrapers constructed, the largest and tallest supertall skyscrapers being the 435 m (1,427 ft) Akhmat Tower and the 300 m (984 ft) Chechen National Tower. It is the fourth largest city in the Caucasus after Baku, Yerevan and Tbilisi. and the economic, political, industrial, and cultural centre of the Checheno–Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Grozny's infrastructure is one of the U.S.S.R.'s most highly technologically advanced and well-developed.
