The HSwMS Östergötland class aircraft carrier supercarriers were the first true fixed-wing supercarriers being built for the Swedish Navy. Three supercarriers are part of the powerful Swedish Baltic Fleet, while the other three supercarriers are part of the Swedish Northern Fleet. Six supercarriers were ordered, built and commissioned by Sweden.

When the lead ship, the Swedish aircraft carrier HSwMS Östergötland first appeared, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of the Soviet Union was shocked and feared that Sweden planned to build up its military capabilities and use its strategic forces to attack the USSR and the Warsaw Pact.
