China, officially the People's Republic of China, is the largest country in East Asia and is the second largest country on the Eurasian continent, after the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics of the Soviet Union and is the world's most populous country with over 1.5 billion people. As the world's oldest survivng civilization, it has been enriched with tradition, culture, and history. During the 19th century, the country experienced numerous crisises especially during the rise of European imperialism. In 1912, the age of dynasties ended and the Republic of China was established. During the following years, China suffered a civil war from warlords, attacks from Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Communist movement. During 1949, China officially became Communist and went through even more decades of hardship, but during the 1980's, China underwent a massive economic recovery following economic reforms in the late 1970s. The country is still accused of its poor human rights record, which plagues the country to this day. Despite this, China has become a major global leader and player in the world economy and has been recognised as the world's third global superpower. It is the world's third largest national economy after the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics of the Soviet Union and the United States with an nominal GDP of $17.771 trillion, and the world's second largest national economy with an GDP by purchasing power parity (PPP) of over $29.233 trillion.

China is a recognised nuclear weapons state and possesses the world's third largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, after the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics of the Soviet Union and the United States. It has the world's third largest military force and the second largest free-standing army, People's Liberation Army. It has the world's third largest air force and the fourth largest navy. It operates the third largest fleet of modern aircraft carriers and is one of the very few countries in the world capable of operating airborne aircraft carriers and modern strategic bombers.
